FAQ

frequently asked questions

Why can't we run the campaign ourselves? Do reallywe need a fundraising consultant?

Very simply, to be successful, a major campaign needs to be staffed. If you have a Development Director, you may be able to manage the day-to-day activities on your own, but in most cases, you would still benefit from the expertise of Campaign Counsel, to guide you through the complexities of a Capital Campaign. We also act as a catalyst to maintain a focus on the capital campaign.

Why do we need a Feasibility Study? Can't we just go and ask for the money?

At a foundational level, a Feasibility Study is a beginning of a cultivation process and a road map for a successful campaign. It identifies how donors prioritize your campaign and the obstacles that must be overcome to be successful. It surfaces potential campaign leadership. And most important, it determines an attainable goal, which is critical in planning major capital projects.

Do we need architectural drawings before we retain a consultant?

To undertake a Feasibility Study you should at least have defined the scope of the proposed project, that includes everything on your wish list, and have an approximate estimate of the cost. The Feasibility study will identify the donors’ priorities and a realistic campaign goal. If necessary, you will then be able to make an informed decision on how to scale back the project.

What do your services cost?

Based on industry standards, on average nonprofits can expect to spend between 4% and 7% of the total raised on all fees and expenses related to a major capital campaign. Our fees are among the most competitive in the Jewish community and our return on investment is at least a factor of ten, when compared to organizations that attempt to self-manage their campaigns.

What if we don't have a philanthropic culture or a successful fundraising track record?

A weak philanthropic culture can affect your results, but in our experience, most organizations significantly underestimate their fundraising capacity, because they evaluate it in relation to their annual appeal. If the case for the campaign is compelling, your benefactors will often be willing to reorder their philanthropic priorities and contribute exponentially more than they have been, to simply keep the lights turned on.

How long does it take to complete a capital campaign?

In our experience, a typical Capital Campaign will take between twelve and eighteen months beginning with the Feasibility Study, through the Quiet Phase, the Public Launch and the conclusion of the Public Phase.
